AuSable Artisan Village

Grayling has become home to a thriving nonprofit art gallery and performing arts center, breathing new life into the local culture and economy. The AuSable Artisan Village is a beautiful place for both local talent and audiences seeking enriching cultural experiences.

Their Mission

The AuSable Artisan Village (AAV) is a nonprofit organization with a primary focus on showcasing Michigan artists and their work. Their core mission revolves around fostering economic growth through various avenues such as art, culture, entertainment, classes, and educational initiatives for children. At the heart of their operation is a commitment to supporting local artists. They provide a platform for artists to display and sell their work, with a percentage of sales contributing to the development of new entertainment ventures. This dual approach not only benefits artists but also enriches the cultural landscape of Grayling. Through their art gallery and performing arts center, the AAV became a focal point for cultural activity in downtown Grayling. The presence of these venues has significantly increased foot traffic, breathing new life into the community and boosting its vibrancy. Overall, the AAV stands as a shining example of how the arts can serve as a catalyst for economic growth and cultural enrichment. By nurturing local talent and providing a platform for expression, they've helped transform Grayling into a destination for art lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.

A Tale of Two Locations

The evolution of the AAV from a single building to a sprawling organization is a testament to its dedication to the arts and the community it serves. Initially conceived as a modest showcase for various art styles, the village has now expanded its footprint with the acquisition of a second location, strategically positioned just down the street. This new building represents not just an expansion but a transformation, adding 6,000 square feet of versatile space to accommodate a diverse range of artistic endeavors. The newly acquired building has been completely refurbished to meet the evolving needs of the organization and its patrons. At the heart of this expansion is a commitment to providing a platform for larger performing arts productions. From concerts and spoken poetry to theatre and improv comedy, the venue now hosts an array of performances that captivate audiences and inspire creativity. In addition to its performance spaces, the new building boasts a dedicated area for clay and pottery work, affectionately dubbed the "Mud Room." This specialized room is equipped with all the tools and amenities necessary for artists to work with clay effectively and comfortably. Moreover, the Mud Room offers a unique membership opportunity, providing users with access to essential equipment like kilns for firing clay, further fostering a sense of community and collaboration among artists. This expansion not only broadens the scope of offerings available to both artists and audiences but also reinforces AAV’s commitment to promoting artistic excellence and creativity in all its forms. As the organization continues to grow and evolve, it remains dedicated to enriching the cultural fabric of Grayling and beyond, ensuring that art and creativity remain accessible to all who seek inspiration and expression.

Volunteers

With the AAV operating almost entirely on volunteer efforts, their dedication to giving back to the community shines brightly. Every aspect of the “AAV” operations, from showcasing local artists to hosting cultural events, is driven by the passion and commitment of these volunteers. Their selfless contributions not only sustain the village but also demonstrate a deep-seated commitment to enriching Grayling's cultural fabric. By relying on volunteers, the AAV not only fosters a sense of community involvement but also ensures that its mission of supporting local artists and providing meaningful cultural experiences remains steadfast. This volunteer-driven approach underscores the AAV genuine desire to serve and enhance the lives of residents and visitors alike through art and creativity.

Movement

The arts have brought a wonderful cultural revival to Grayling, accompanied by noticeable growth in both population and economic activity. The community is becoming increasingly vibrant, with more people and cultural offerings such as concerts, social gatherings, breweries, restaurants, and now an art gallery and performing arts studio. One standout program is "Art in a Day," where dedicated volunteers from the artisan village visit local elementary school to teach engaging art and culture classes to fourth graders. At the end of each season, these students embark on a special field trip to the artisan village, further enriching their artistic experience. Meanwhile, the board of directors plays a crucial role in Grayling's development by selecting individuals deeply connected to the area and committed to its growth. Their thoughtful choices ensure that community leaders with strong ties to Grayling and Crawford County are driving initiatives that enhance the cultural fabric and foster community spirit.

Experience The AuSable Artisan Village

As the AuSable Artisan Village evolves, it remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing creativity, fostering community connections, and ensuring that Grayling remains a vibrant destination for art enthusiasts and cultural adventurers. With each brushstroke and each performance, the AAV reaffirms its role as a vital cultural hub, shaping a brighter, more artistic future for the entire region.
