Coming from Genesee County, and now living in Hale Michigan, Terry Bovee has brought his services to the area and has left a mark on The Land of 60 Lakes.
Bovee Background
Terry grew up in southeastern Michigan and attended the University of Michigan, where he earned an engineering degree. He began his career at General Motors but grew tired of city life after four years. Seeking a change, Terry moved to Hale, Michigan, to work with Darton Archery, commuting from Oscoda for nine years. During this time, he developed a deep love for Northeast Michigan, where he met his wife. They settled in Hale, where they lived for 34 years and raised a family.
In the past 14 years, Terry ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing the Victorian Cafe. He aimed to enhance the local community and attract visitors to the town. Additionally, over the last six years, Terry has taken on a significant role as the third owner of Alward's Market, a cornerstone business in Hale. His contributions have further solidified his ties to the community and reinforced his commitment to its prosperity.
Alward’s Market
Alward’s Market, a longstanding institution in Hale, Michigan, has served the community for 76 years. Founded by Jerry Wyatt, the market has been celebrated for its commitment to quality produce and cherished traditions throughout much of the last century. Today, Terry and his dedicated staff uphold the legacy by faithfully using all of Jerry Wyatt’s original recipes, as well as maintaining the same processing and smoking techniques implemented since the business’s inception.
Jerry Wyatt originally owned and operated the market for 30 years before passing it on to Bob Alward, who meticulously ran the store for 40 years. Six years ago, Terry acquired Alward’s Market from Bob, ensuring the continuity of the market’s excellence and deep-rooted traditions. Under Terry's stewardship, Alward’s Market continues to thrive as a cornerstone of Hale, preserving its heritage while serving the community with unwavering dedication.

Alward’s Market is renowned for its delectable bacon, which has become a local favorite. Beyond this savory treat, the market serves the community as a comprehensive one-stop shop offering groceries, toiletries, and fresh produce. Their country-famous bacon stands out as their top seller, complemented by a selection of the highest quality meat cuts available in-store. Additionally, Alward’s specializes in smoking and crafting jerky and meat sticks from a variety of meats including beef, turkey, chicken, pork, and even salmon, ensuring a diverse range of flavorful options for their customers.
The Victorian Café
Before acquiring Alward’s Market, Terry established The Victorian Café—a beloved spot in Hale known for its breakfast, lunch, coffee, teas, and ice cream. His aim was to contribute more to the community, providing not only a perfect spot for vacationers but also a cozy, family-friendly venue where locals could gather and enjoy quality time together.
Terry and the Community
Terry's journey from city life to the tranquil place of Hale, Michigan has been a remarkable transformation. Initially drawn by the allure of a quieter lifestyle, Terry soon found himself deeply embedded within the fabric of the community. Establishing his own business and now the owner of Alward's Market, Terry not only found professional success but also earned the admiration of his neighbors. The town's playful suggestion of "Terry for Mayor" underscores his growing influence and popularity among the locals. However, beyond any jest, Terry's pride in calling Hale home is genuine and heartfelt. The warmth and support he has received from the amazing people of Hale have made it more than just a place to live—it has become his cherished community. In Hale, Terry has discovered more than just a new location; he has found a home where he can thrive personally and professionally, surrounded by people who appreciate and value his contributions.
Love of Northeast Michigan
With ownership of two businesses demanding most of Terry’s time, he cherishes the quiet and privacy of his woodland home. Despite Hale's reputation as the Land of Sixty Lakes, drawing countless vacationers seeking recreational activities, Terry finds his greatest joy in the tranquility of his secluded retreat. Nestled among towering trees and lush vegetation, his sanctuary is a haven frequented by woodland creatures like deer, rabbits, and squirrels, providing him with a serene escape from his busy work life.
